Quick
Installation Guide For FFE Windows
Click Here For Macintosh Quick Installation Guide
Overview:
By using this guide, most users will be able to
quickly install FFE for Windows via the Web. A separate troubleshooting guide
is also available to assist with any problems.
Requirements:
FFE for Windows requires 30mb free disk space,
16 mb of RAM, and a 386 or greater processor to install. Either Windows 3.1,
Windows NT, or Windows '95 can be used. A working copy of Netscape Navigator
must be installed to access the Internet.
FFE for Windows will install easily on most machines. Installation is a two-step process
consisting of downloading the installation program using Netscape Navigator,
and then executing the downloaded program. Simply follow the instructions
below. If the install program issues warnings, please write these down and either
check the troubleshooting guide or send email to FFETECH@columbia.edu.
Notes:
Please quit all other applications before installing FFE.
Most users will need to run the install twice to properly
configure ODBC drivers. If you get ODBC errors from the application and only
ran the install once, run it again. It is not necessary to run it more than
twice.
Please run the FFE Updater after completing the installation
to bring FFE up to date. When the Reporting Module is updated, you will
see a DOS box open up which may remain on the screen. (It will say
'Finished' in the right hand corner.) Click on the "close box" for
this window and continue. This box will be setup to automatically close soon.
Installation Instructions:
Use Netscape Navigator to go to the FFE
Distribution Page. The URL address for the page is currently http://www.ais.columbia.edu/ffe
. Once there, select "Download FFE".
Click on the Download FFE for Windows Installation Package.
Click on the Download FFE for Windows (Production) link on the page shown. This
will start the download of the FFE Installation program.
When the download starts, you may be asked how to handle the file. Select
'Save' so that the file will be saved to disk. If Netscape is already
configured to load .EXE files, then it will perform this step automatically.
A Save File dialog box will appear so that you can tell Netscape where to store
the installation file. You should store the file in the C:\ directory. Write
down the location where you store it, because you will need to find it again.
Navigator will download the installation program to your hard drive (C:\). A
message box will appear on the screen showing the progress of the download. The
installation program is several megabytes long, and can take from a few seconds
(on a fast connection with little traffic) to several minutes (on a slow or
modem connection or if there is much traffic).
When Navigator has finished downloading the program, the download message box
will disappear.
Quit Navigator and all other open applications.
Run the download (FFEWIN3X.EXE, FFEWIN95.EXE, or FFEWINNT.EXE) using the Run
command on the Start Menu (in Windows '95 or NT) or the Run command in the
Program Manager (in Windows 3.1).
FFE for Windows will install automatically. Please note any warnings or errors
which appear.
After Installation and Rebooting:
An icon for FFE for Windows will be installed.
Click on this icon to start FFE for Windows. FFE for Windows can also be run
from the program group (in Windows 3.1), or the Start Menu (in Windows '95). If
you are running Windows '95, you should create a shortcut to FFE for Windows on
the desktop. Right click on the FFE for Windows icon and select 'Create
Shortcut'. Drag this shortcut to the desktop.
